An album with two sides

Rick Astley – Hold me in your arms

Rick Astley released “Hold me in your arms” at the end of January 1989. He launched it as the third single from his album with the same title.
Rick started a transition. He realized that the previous album was clearly an project of Stock Aitken and Waterman’s. A successful album which really boosted Rick’s success, but entirely governed by the three producers. They made every choice: songs, releases, videos, everything.

But we know that Rick did not really agree with this situation. He wanted to be more important in this project.

Actually this album is clearly divided in two halves! We can find the typical SAW’s songs, with the usual rhythm, lurics and arrangements.

But we can also find more original songs, that Rick composed and chose, and he worked with different producers on these songs. And you can here, even from the first notes of the songs!

Clearly the first song “She wants to dance with me” resembles Rick’s taste (and sounds different from other Astley’s songs). The second, “Take me to your heart”, on the other hand, seems exactly the typical Stock Aitken Waterman’s song. And we cannot say it was not successful.

On the other hand this song, “Hold me in your arms”, is slower, a little bit melancholic. It clearly carries Rick’s sign!

Finally, the album seems stil divided in two parts, but Rick had made up his mind: the departure from Stock Aitken and Waterman was decided!!

We've been trying for a long time
To say what we want to say
But feelings don't come easy
To express in a simple way
