Kim Carnes – Bette Davis Eyes

#quotefromthe80s
She'll take a tumble on you
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
She's got Bette Davis eyes

When I think of the song Bette Davis Eyes I always come up with a question: who really opened the 80s, turning the keys in the lock of future and music?

Maybe the first was Kim Carnes, steamy haired American singer with a good career behind her, who suddenly found the song that would project her directly into history.

In May 1981, Bette Davis Eyes was one of the first songs of the 80s to be successful in the whole world. A fantastic song, peculiar for many reasons. First, there was a rumor that the voice was actually Rod Stewart’s roar, altered with a computer (what was available at the time, Spectrum? Commodore 64?); then, one reason everyone remembers the song and the video is that at some point everyone starts to gleefully slap faces one another at music beat.

And the whole video, however, is intriguing and full of action. We didn’t know then, but it was filmed by the director of the 80s, that Russell Mulcahy who over the next few years will be filming immortal videos like The reflex, The Wild Boys, and all the best Duran Duran’s videos, but also Queen’s A kind of magic, several videos by Rod Stewart… a real protagonist of the 80s.

Well, the song is about Bette Davis’ eyes, and here’s a true story to tell: the real Bette Davis, who was 73 at the time, really enjoyed the song and wanted to get to know not only Kim Carnes, but also the whole group who had worked on the song.

She thanked them for two reasons. The first is that this song in a way made her famous again, and in a way the song brought Bette Davis and her myth into the modernity of the 80s. Then, she also thanked them because Bette Davis had a granddaughter, and this granddaughter told Bette that she was very happy with her, because she was thrilled that someone had dedicated such a beautiful song to her grandmother!

I mean, she and Kim became great friends, and I like to think that Kim would sometimes visit her and spend some time with her when Bette was getting older! Isn’t it a good story???
