Karel Fialka – Hey Matthew
#quotefromthe80s
In this world of villains do you see the crime?
Is a superhero waiting at the edge of time?
Hey Matthew, when you're watching TV;
I said Hey, Hey Matthew, what do you see?

In August 1987, a song came out, and it was a real jewel from the 80s. The song had two protagonists. The author, Karel Fialka, a quality author and musician who had had a lot of experience since the early 1980s and found international success with this song after traveling the world (after all, he was born in India to a Scottish mother and Czechoslovak father, and then of course stopped in England).
But the real protagonist was the other guy, a child, little Matthew who gives the title to the song. And Matthew is really Karel Fialka’s son, and through this song Karel gives voice to his fatherly concerns about the content and messages that children could absorb from the mass media. In the 80s their exposure was obviously towards television and the programs that young people watched, today it could be towards internet or smartphones.
Karel doesn’t ask Matthew what he watches on tv, but what he sees, because he obviously knows that Matthew sees the world through TV with the innocence of a child. In the song Karel also expresses the curiosity, like all those who are parents do, to understand what his son will have from life, what kind of person he will be, obviously wishing him good luck. A very simple song, made with less more than a synthesizer and an electronic drum machine. An incredibly beautiful song.
Karel Fialka, as well as a great artist, also proved to be a very kind person, and gave me the opportunity to exchange a few words with him about “Hey, Matthew” and the 80s. At this point we just have to read the interview with Karel Fialka!
