October 20, 1986 was a highly anticipated day in the teen pop world. A new song was being broadcast on the radio with the related video, announced for days. Strange feeling, very high expectations also because we had been waiting for a long time, and that subtle fear that it could be not up to the previous ones (a feeling that was then repeated for decades). Because of course, we knew that this name was a guarantee, but we all knew that in the last few years a lot had changed, and therefore anything could happen. And so, seeing the video and hearing Duran Duran’s Notorious<\/em> was an absolutely crucial moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had been three years since the days of Seven and the Ragged Tiger<\/em> and The Reflex<\/a><\/em>. In between there was the happy parenthesis of Arena<\/em> and The Wild Boys<\/a><\/em>, but there was also A View to a Kill<\/em> and the approach to Live Aid, with the not satisfying performance in Philadelphia, which seemed to announce the separation and the dissolution of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lost two of the three Taylors, Duran Duran were left in three. Their producer was Nile Rodgers, the king of funky, who had nevertheless proved to be a certainty since the remixes of The Reflex<\/em> and The Wild Boys<\/em>, and it was therefore clear that the album that would be released in a month’s time would be a very very funky record. And indeed, from the very first notes, Notorious<\/em> was a great piece, much more refined and mature than the previous songs. Three seconds are enough, not so much for the choir at the beginning, but for that syncopated electric guitar round: it was like hearing the riff of Le Freak<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Andy Taylor’s irrepressible guitar was missing, but there was this Cuccurullo guy who had still had a good success with Missing Persons, and today we know that later in his life he would have had several other artistic inclinations, let’s say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notorious<\/em>‘s lyrics were certainly captivating, but not easy to understand, as was often the case with songs written by Simon Le Bon. The upcoming album was certainly inspired in some way by the works of Alfred Hitchcock, also because three songs were titled like three films by the great director (but one later came out with a different title), but other than that, the lyrics were often hermetic. And after all Simon Le Bon not only did not like to explain in detail the meaning of his lyrics, but often argued that sometimes they were just the sounds of words that went well together, and that there shouldn’t necessarily be a mysterious meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, to this day we know little about this woman manipulator of witnesses and prophets that is spoken of in the refrain. We know a little more, however, about the woman who appears in the video of the song and in the cover photos of the album: she is the top-model Christy Turlington, a great friend of Jasmin, Simon Le Bon’s wife. The video was shot by directors Peter Kagan and Paula Greif, who had recently shot Steve Winwood’s video of Higher Love<\/em> with similar techniques: lots of black and white or sepia images, color filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notorious<\/em> was a huge success and topped the charts in many countries. The latent Duranmania for three years was coming out with arrogance. In fact the whole album Notorious<\/em> was a great success, but according to many it was also the album that signaled the beginning of the decline of Duran Duran. On the opposite, I think Notorious<\/em> is an even better album than Seven and the Ragged Tiger<\/em>, musically, where Duran focused more on songs and arrangements than on hairstyles and clothing as was sometimes the case on previous albums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A more mature album, you can hear it from various songs, and on the other hand, after the separation and with three more years on our shoulders, we could really say that Duran Duran had grown up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il 20 ottobre 1986 fu un giorno molto atteso nel mondo pop degli adolescenti. nelle radio veniva trasmessa una canzone nuova con il relativo video, annunciato da giorni. Sensazione strana, grandissime aspettative anche perch\u00e9 aspettavamo da tempo, e quella sottile paura che non fosse all’altezza dei precedenti (sensazione che si \u00e8 poi ripetuta per decenni). Perch\u00e9 s\u00ec, il nome era quello ed era una garanzia, ma sapevamo tutti che negli ultimi anni era cambiato molto, e poteva quindi succedere di tutto. E quindi, vedere il video e sentire Notorious<\/em> dei Duran Duran era un momento assolutamente cruciale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dai tempi di Seven and the Ragged Tiger<\/em>, e The Reflex<\/a><\/em> erano passati tre anni. In mezzo c’era stata la parentesi felice di Arena<\/em> e di The Wild Boys<\/a><\/em>, ma c’era stato anche A View to a Kill<\/em> e il percorso di avvicinamento al Live Aid, con la performance a Philadelphia non all’altezza che di fatto annunciava la separazione e lo scioglimento del gruppo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persi due dei tre Taylor, i Duran Duran restavano in tre. Il loro produttore era Nile Rodgers, il re del funky, che si era comunque dimostrato una certezza dai tempi dei remix di The Reflex<\/em> e The Wild Boys<\/em>, ed era quindi chiaro che l’album che sarebbe poi uscito di l\u00ec a un mese sarebbe stato un disco molto molto funky. E in effetti, fin dalle prime note, Notorious era un grandissimo pezzo, ma molto pi\u00f9 studiato e maturo delle canzoni precedenti. Bastano tre secondi, non tanto per il coretto all’inizio, ma per quel giro di chitarra elettrica sincopata: sembrava di sentire il riff di Le Freak<\/em> degli Chic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certo, mancava la chitarra incontenibile di Andy Taylor, ma c’era questo Cuccurullo che aveva avuto comunque un buon successo con i Missing Persons, e oggi sappiamo che poi nella vita avrebbe avuto diverse altre inclinazioni artistiche, diciamo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il testo di Notorious<\/em> era sicuramente accattivante, ma non di facile comprensione, come spesso accadeva con la canzoni scritte da Simon Le Bon. L’album in uscita era sicuramente ispirato in qualche modo dai lavori di Alfred Hitchcock, anche perch\u00e9 tre canzoni erano intitolate come tre film del grande regista (ma una usc\u00ec poi con un titolo diverso), ma a parte questo i testi erano spesso ermetici. E del resto Simon Le Bon non solo non amava spiegare nel dettaglio il significato dei suoi testi, ma spesso sosteneva che a volte erano solo suoni di parole che stavano bene insieme, e che non dovesse per forza esserci un significato misterioso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E cos\u00ec, a tutt’oggi sappiamo poco di questa donna manipolatrice di testimoni e profeti di cui si parla nel ritornello. Sappiamo un po’ di pi\u00f9, invece, della donna che appare nel video della canzone e nelle foto di copertina dell’album: si tratta della modella Christy Turlington, grande amica di Jasmin, la moglie di Simon Le Bon. Il video fu girato dai registi Peter Kagan e Paula Greif, che avevano da poco girato il video di Higher Love<\/em> di Steve Winwood con tecniche analoghe: molte immagini in bianco e nero o seppia, filtri colorati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notorious fu un grandissimo successo e arriv\u00f2 in testa alle classifiche in tantissimi Paesi, inclusa l’Italia. La Duranmania latente da tre anni usciva con prepotenza. In effetti tutto l’album Notorious<\/em> ebbe un ottimo successo, ma secondo molti fu anche l’album che indic\u00f2 l’inizio della decadenza dei Duran Duran. Paradossalmente, penso che Notorious<\/em> sia un album anche migliore di Seven and the Ragged Tiger<\/em>, musicalmente, in cui i Duran si concentrarono pi\u00f9 sulle canzoni e sugli arrangiamenti che non su acconciature e vestiti come a volte era capitato negli album precedenti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un album pi\u00f9 maturo, lo si sente da varie canzoni, e d’altra parte, dopo la separazione e con tre anni di pi\u00f9 sulle spalle, potevamo davvero dire che i Duran Duran erano diventati grandi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
