Hip hop, and plenty of class

Neneh Cherry – Manchild

We discovered Neneh Cherry in October 1988, when she found success with “Buffalo stance“. That hit was a pure hip hop, in its style and content. And we definitely got the feeling that this young girl really got plenty of talent!

In other words, the feeling that she would soon have been distincted in the hip hop and in pop landscape. And that feeling became real in May 1989, when she released the second single from her outstanding album “Raw like Sushi”. “Manchild” is a great song. Hip hop, but also a seriously deep song. A song of the 80s but definitely also a very modern song. Neneh leaves her mark and starts a career that will grant her a lot of awards and nominations, and will also involve her in a lot of social and civil initiatives.

The video also went straightforward in the empireum of music videos. I am not sure, if we can call it an 80s video. I’d say that in 1989 Neneh anticipated a style, special effects and a scenography that belongs more to the mid to end 90s. In other words, she was about ten years in advance! And of course, Neneh Cherry’s talent and artistic inspiration would definitely boom and skyrocket during the incoming 90s!

Turn around and ask yourself
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state you're in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, Manchild, Manchild
