High five… to his career

Jovanotti – Gimme five

“Gimme five” climbed the charts in Italy between May and June 1988. Jovanotti actually launched his first hit “Walking” in 1987. The following year he released his first album “Jovanotti 4 President”. This was maybe his first hit to go up the charts. This hit marked the beginning of his career, with the big push of DeeJay Television and the famous dj and producer Claudio Cecchetto. And here we see “video sing-a-song”, my favourite section of DeeJay Television”.

Jovanotti was just 20, full of energy and willing to dance, sing, jump and have fun with lots of friends. Few people could say that he would have had a life long career. Yet we know, after 30 years, that Lorenzo Cherubini is definitely a great author. With his sensibility he could reach the soul of many generations, even though he does not really have the most lyric of voices 🙂

The story says that his nickname had to be “Joe Vanotti”, following the line of anglicized italian words as nicknames, meaning “yong guys”. In Italy we had for example Den Harrow (meaning “money”) and Joe Yellow (“jewel”). As it always happens, destiny wanted the last word. A typographer who spoke a bad english wrote “Jovanotti”, all tied and without the “e”, for one of his concerts. Lorenzo reacted saying that… ok, why not? Let’s keep it like this!

I wouldn’t say that Jovanotti is simply an artist of the 80s, since he had his greatest success in the three following decades. Surely he became a symbol, at least in Italy, of the transition between 80s and 90s. Surely he took from the 80s his joy for live, his passion for music and his ability to give fun to all other young people! This is definitely clear in “Gimme five”! I had the cassette of his album!
