U2 – New Year’s Day

I mean, when a song has a title like “New year’s day”, it definitely becomes the song for every New Year’s Eve in the 80s, just like “Last Christmas“, only a week later! U2 released this hit in January 1983, it was the first single from the famous album “War”.

At those times I did not know U2, I was just a 13 year-old boy going to middle schools in Italy, and also U2 were definitely not so popular as in the future. But they already wrote serious songs: this hit starts with lyrics that Bono wrote to his wife, but during the realization of the song it was also inspired by the Polish trade union Solidarnosc.

Actually that trade union contributed, after some time, to the fall of the communist block in Poland and brought Lech Walesa to the Nobel prize and to become the President of Poland.

So we can say that ths hit opened not just a new year for Bono, The Edge, and co., but it helped open a new life and a new fantastic career: after this album their success met no limits, album after album, tour after tour.

But what about Bono looking like Kajagoogoo’s Limahl, the singer of “Too shy” and “Neverending story”? Ok, Bono and U2 were so great that they really did not need any glamour look, and they soon realized it

Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered, black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
#U2 #NewYearsDay
