Eddy Grant – Gimme hope Jo’anna

“Gimme hope Jo’anna” was a worldwide famous song, with an irresistible rhythm and a strong political condemnation. Some say that the song contains hidden meanings related to the South African politics.

They are wrong: Eddy Grant’s lyrics are not hidden meanings, but a strong and open condemnation! The government in Johannesburg (Jo’anna) with their powerful allies supporting apartheid, protecting white community’s privileges and luxury. In fact lyrics talk explicitly about Soweto, about the South African habit to interfere with neighbour countries politics. There is a clear reference to Sun City (which we heard in another song as well), and the song mentions anti-apartheid archbishop Desmond Tutu: the statement is strong and clear!

Anyway, history was already running its course, and in a couple of years, in February 1990, south african president de Klerk would finally set Mandela free and would rehabilitate the African National Congress party. History would soon start to write a new page of hope for mankind.

#quotefromthe80s
I wanna know if you’re blind Jo’anna
If you wanna hear the sound of drum
Can’t you see that the tide is turning
Oh don’t make me wait till the morning come
