Your past, your future

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers – Tomorrow people

Within “Tomorrow people” there is all the meaning of time, past and future. Not only for lyrics, wondering on the past of tomorrow people, and how long they will last if there is no love in their hearts (which is a real reggae concept!). Also for the whole story of the Melody Makers group. In other words, four of the many Bob Marley’s descendants: Ziggy (born David), Stephen and their sisters Cedella and Sharon.

The group worked since 1979, following Bob’s request. When Bob Marley passed away in 1981, after singing at his funeral, the group kind of lost their direction. They needed to work with external collaborators in order to be on their track again.

Since 1984 they collaborated with producer Steve Levine, and started to find success and fame, especially in reggae landscape. But they reached the top of their fame when they started to work with two other artists. We are talking about Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. In other words, the Talking Heads without David Byrne. The help of Talking Heads bass and drums players was really important for the Melody Makers, and in 1988 they released the album “Conscious Party” with this hit “Tomorrow people”, maybe the top of their career, between July and August 1988.

Actually they had other successful periods in their career, maybe more focused on the reggae world, but the group parted in early 2000’s. Yet with “Conscious Party” they had even won a Grammy Award, and they won two more in the rest of their career!

#quotefromthe80s
Tomorrow you say you're gone and you're not coming back
If there is no love in your heart oh now
There will never be hope for you
Tomorrow people, where is your past?
