Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Two tribes

”Two tribes” debuted in Summer 1984, just few months after the incredible success of “Relax”. I think was the purest and best period of the 80s overall. The title does not refer to particular tribes. Holly Johnson and the group said that it could be Cowboys and Indians, or Captain Kirk and the Klingons. Or, naturally, Russia and America during the cold war. After all, the actors in the video are clearly looking like Reagan and Cernienko, the Russian Prime Minister before Gorbachev.

The video is glamorous and somehow gruesome, in perfect FGTH style. Reagan bites Chernienko’s ear, the United Natios delegates place and collect bets, and at the end, boom! The world explodes. The nuclear nightmare was really trendy in that period! Moreover, FGTH had the chance to put some weird quotes and text in the lyrics.

Finally, “Two Tribes” reached the top of the charts in about one week. It stayed three months at number one, a sort of record for the whole 80s. But the people started to buy also “Relax” once more, so Frankie Goes To Hollywood found themselves at both the first and the second place of the charts! Real icons of the 80s!
