“Black velvet” is the story of an outstanding canadian girl who released her first, eponymous album in March 1989. Even if she later released in July her greatest hit, it did not take long to be at the top of all the most important charts in the world.

Extremely beautiful, so sensual as only rock girls can be, this girl skyrockets her career at almost 30. And she deserves a whole lot of admiration and respect also for the nickname that she adopted, shifting from her real name Alannah Byles, to the most famous “Alannah Myles”.

Black Velvet is a borderline song between 80s and 90s. It really sounds like an 80s song, and the rock really sounds like the 80s. The video is quite simple and minimalist, and it reminds more of the 90s. This hit has a great story behind. It all begins when Alannah boyfriend goes to Memphis and discovers the everlasting love that Elvis fans still dedicate to the king of rock. A real religion, that he describes in the main verse of the song, “a new religion that’ll bring you to your knees”. And Memphis is full of memorabilia, especially the framed pictures painted on black velvet, with that little boy smile. That smile that he reserved for every fan, until in a flash he was gone, and it happened too soon.

Alannah could not completely enjoy the success of her hit, and years later she declared that her label deceived her. In fact, due to an unfair contract, Alannah started enjoying jer deserved earnings only on 2000’s.

So, please listen to this fantastic hit, look at this great video, and I suggest you to also read those incredible lyrics!
