We already saw that the 80s did not begin on January 1, 1980, and of course they did not end on December 31, 1989, but few weeks earlier. They ended on a rainy Thursday evening. I was with some friends in the house of a girl of our group of friends. The evening news gave very confused information few hours earlier, and in a couple of hours completely unexpected things happened. So there we were, in this nice living room, the night of November 9, 1989, five or six friends and the family of this girl, all stuck to the TV, unable to believe what we were seeing from Berlin.

A massive crowd gathered from either side of the Wall: few hours before, a speaker of the German Democratic Republic, East Germany, in other words, announced that people would have soon been able to cross the border. A journalist asked “when exactly will it happen?”. The legend says that nobody really had the answer, and the destiny put the words in the mouth of the speaker: “Right now!”

This set the world on fire, but actually the situation had been evolving for months, years. Pope John Paul II visited Germany and Poland in 1987 and set the ground for Lech Walesa and Solidarnosc win at the Polish elections. Ronald Reagan visited Berlin and publicly asked “Please, open that doors!” to USSR premier Mikhail Gorbachev. Bruce Springsteen was allowed to perform in East Berlin and in August, Hungary opened the borders to Austria. So, November 9, was definitely not a random episode in history.

Yet it was a moment in history. Those who were born after 1990 might definitely not know the names of Honecker, general Jaruzelski, Ceausescu, for example. Places like “DDR”, “Yugoslavia”, “Czechoslovakia”, “USSR”, “Leningrad” are one thousand years old, now. The wall crumbled in few hours. During my whole life, it has always been there. I had never seen it, but I knew it was the border of the world.

That night, the world changed. And soon the world needed to find new rules, new actors, maybe also new fears. That night, the 80s came to the end. The world, my own world, that night grew up.

We have been talking together about music for years, living the 80s day after day, song after song. We also will have to change, and we will talk soon about it. But today, let’s enjoy this iconic song, from a German group… and just for tonight, let’s borrow a song from 1990!
