Pet Shop Boys – Heart
“Heart” is one of the best examples of the absolute genius of Pet Shop Boys. The song was released in mid March 1988 as the last single taken from the album “Actually”. A nice song, of course, maybe simpler than many others, at first sight, in lyrics and in melody. Yet Pet Shop Boys made it a masterpiece: they created a sound that would later become a factory brand, with a lot of electronics and the samples in the refrain. And the video too was a masterpiece of humour.
A lot of small details really make a masterpiece. Neil Tennant later revealed that the samples in the refrain of course included his voice, but also the voices of Pavarotti and Prefab Sprout‘s Wendy Smith. And did you recognize the vampire? He is the great great actor Ian McKellen. Maybe, rather than a vampire, you are used to see him as Magneto or Gandalf… The bride was a very popular actress in Yugoslavia, where the video was filmed (now Slovenia), in a perfect Young Frankenstein’s environment. In summary, the song is beautiful, but everything Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe put around the song is an absolute masterpiece! It’s so cool, after thirty years, to find out that we were loving absolute geniuses, isn’t it?

Every time I see you something happens to me
Like a chain reaction between you and me
My heart starts missing a beat
My heart starts missing a beat, every time
