Tanita Tikaram – Twist in my sobriety
“Twist in my sobriety” is more than just a song for Tanita Tikaram. It’s a sort of identity document. On Sep 13, 1988, Tanita releases her first album, “Ancient Heart”. She had already released “Good tradition” as a single in the previous months. A clear talent, extremely peculiar. Everybody remembers her fantastic hit, her uncommon name, surrounded by a sense of mystery. “Twist in my sobriety” went straight into the evergreen and the meories of the 80s. Tanita’s charisma was astonishing. The beauty of her 19 years (she’s a month younger than I), completely unknown, an iconic sepia video filmed in Bolivia. And most of all, her deep voice that kept us tied around her.
Tanita’s success, supported by her fantastic real name, followed uncommon paths. If we look at numbers, Tanita released a lot of albums, and had periods of pause. Four albums between 1988 and 1992, than three years off, other albums in a row, other years off. Maybe she never really replied the worldwide success that she found with “Twist in my sobriety”, but we need to consider that her talent took her off the easy success of pop and brought her towards more complex sounds, and maybe less popular. But Tanita is not a woman for compromises, and her style brought her more engaged and refined styles. Needless to say that the first line in this song is the title of a book by poet Maya Angelou.
Tanita released her more recent album in 2016, so she has been active for about 30 years and she deserves our admiration for this. And also because, in our own hall of fame, her star is shining since the 80s!
#quotefromthe80s
I don't care about their different thoughts
Different thoughts are good for me
Up in arms and chaste and whole
All God's children took their toll
