The Queen of Summer

Sabrina – Boys (Summertime Love)

#quotefromthe80s
Everybody, summertime love
Be my lover, be my baby
Boys, boys, boys
I'm looking for a good time

Did you know that there was a year when summer officially started at the end of May?

In the second part of the 80s, summers throughout Europe had an absolute, undisputed Queen: Sabrina Salerno, simply Sabrina for everyone. So beautiful that she was immediately associated with songs that obviously spoke of summer loves and sentimental conquests, Sabrina was able to seize the opportunity to become a constant presence in summer music (and beyond). Really, if she wasn’t there, summer couldn’t begin.

Trash? Perhaps, but all calculated, I have no doubt, and after all, this was the role we asked her to play! And then, when Queen Sabrina’s records arrived, it was the time to open discos and clubs on the beach, swimming pools in the cities, cabins, beaches, water balloons… in short, summer had arrived! And in 1987, summer came on May 29, when the biggest hit of the Queen of Summer was officially released.

Sabrina’s career had begun the previous year with the smash hit Sexy Girl, but by the summer of 1987, Sabrina and her producers had made it big. Sabrina had an entire album ready, obviously entitled Sabrina, which also included some covers chosen, in my humble opinion, with great skill, such as Kiss by Prince, My Sharona by The Knack, Lady Marmalade or Da ya think I’m sexy by Rod Stewart. Certainly, however, the main song, which remained Sabrina’s success par excellence, was Boys (Summertime Love), which many still call “Boys, Boys, Boys” inspired by the chorus.

The song, with Claudio Cecchetto and Matteo Bonsanto as main authors and producers, really had a resounding success throughout Europe, and in many countries even returned to the charts the following year.

The video was quite simple, shot in the swimming pool of a hotel in Jesolo, Italy, not far from Venice. The hotel still exists, and it is recognizable by the sign that can be seen in a frame. The video essentially shows Sabrina singing in a bathing suit in the swimming pool. It was probably filmed as a video clip of music TV programs of the time, such as “Deejay Television”, rather than a real video, but it certainly worked, and helped to consecrate Sabrina’s career.

Looking at her career, Sabrina has certainly proven over the years that she is not only a good singer, but that she is a highly intelligent woman and artist. Still extremely beautiful without any surgical help, she has always known how to interpret her character and how to wear her sensuality with great professionalism and irony, always remaining herself, without ever descending into vulgarity and without ever being negatively talked about in so many years – and this is certainly not by chance, but is the fruit of great intelligence and a professional approach.

In short, Boys (Summertime Love) was perhaps a simple song, and one could also remain a prisoner of such a song, but Sabrina’s great intelligence was able to transform it into a timeless symbol of fun and humour enhanced by the skills of this eternal and very Italian icon of the 80s.
