Martika – Toy soldiers
“Toy soldiers” shows what could happen in the late 80s. In fact, many young ladies, extremely talented, reached success with unforgettable and very deep songs. We already saw Tanita Tikaram, we will soon talk about Lisa Stansfield or Alannah Myles, for example.
One of the most successful and unexpected of them was Martika. Not yet 20 years old (we share the same age), a career already behind her shoulders in kids tv. In late 1988 she released her album (called “Martika” of course). But in January 1989 she released “Toy soldiers” in the UK and she really entered the gallery of fame of the 80s.
Actually, a strong topic, addiction, seen from the right distance. An incredible voice, a fantastic song that really captures our attention even after 30 years. It really merges elements of childish happiness and the bitter awareness of being in a trouble.
Martika’s career took off once again. She actually released anoher memorable album and hit two years later called “Martika’s kitchen”. Since then, she never stopped acting and making music, even if her career remained very focused on the US market.

Bit by bit torn apart
We never win
But the battle wages on
For toy soldiers
