In early November 1980, European pop charts welcomed the arrival of a young girl who would remain forever in the imagination and in the hearts of the 80s dinosaurs. All those who were between 8 and probably 80 years old at the time, dreamt of being her boyfriend.
course she was also my secret girlfriend, although she never knew: her name was Lio, pronounced Liò, a Portuguese who moved with her mother to Belgium, where she was discovered and launched by three wird guys, named Telex. Exactly the authors of “Moskow Diskow”, one of the many 80s songs released before the beginning of the 80s, also because we know that the real 80s began in August 1981.
Lio was beautiful, she had a charming voice, and above all she was really an 80s girl!!!!! It’s not a trivial phrase: Lio was really the proof that times were changing, culturally and musically.
When Lio arrived in a music show, she made us forget everything else. After all, this girl showed such a personality, at just 18 years old, showing up in a nightdress and little more to sing a simple but beautiful song, “Amoureux solitaires”, flirty but without absolutely descending into vulgarity, and certainly remaining on the thread of seduction?
Moreover, it was quite rare to see Lio in a show, because in 1980 there was no MTV or other all-music channels yet, and the concept of videoclip did not yet exist, apart from some brilliant pioneering experiment such as “Video killed the radio star” by Buggles, and therefore if you wanted to see Lio, you had to wait until she was a guest on some musical show, because youtube was about thirty years away!
We said the song was simple, but only at first look. It was written by a very French and very popular duo, Elli et Jacno. Elli was of course Elli Medeiros, uruguayan singer and dancer who settled in France, and who would have further popularity in 1986 with “Vamos a bailar calypso”. Jacno, who died in 2009, was a forerunner of French pop music, and along with Elli had been part of Stinky Toys, a French punk band, and later became a great musician and producer.
As we said, Lio had personality and talent to sell, this was clear to everyone even though the girl was at her first album (but she had already found some popularity in France about a year earlier with “Le banana split”, which was later included on the same album).
Perhaps her limit was the choice to sing only in French, which certainly penalised her in the UK and part of Europe. After other successes such as “Amicalement votre” Lio started multiple careers, because she acted in over twenty films, and today she is a beloved character of French television, and always a very beautiful woman of course. And in all this hectic activity, she also found time to raise six children!!!
