Swing Out Sister – Breakout

Don't stop to ask
And now you've found a break to make at last
You've got to find a way
Say what you want to say

In October 1986, a beautiful song by a very original band entered the charts. The group gave a sensation of fun and serenity, but actually they had been quite under pressure! In fact, they had a contract for only two songs, sort of a trial period, and their first song went pretty unnoticed.
And so the record company was rushing the group, because they wanted to quickly figure out whether it was appropriate to continue investing in them or not. The other members of the group, founders Andy and Martin, were somewhere else in England, because they also collaborated with other groups, and so the in London the pressure focused on Corinne, who in addition to being the voice and image of the group, was also the lyrics author.
Corinne is a perfectionist: her experience as a fashion designer left her with a maniacal attention for details, and she needs more time to tidy up and refine the confusing ideas she has in her head. But at some point the situation crumbles: the record company loses patience and calls her saying… Okay, a person’s coming on a bike, in about half an hour… give him what you have ready.
And so Corinne puts together a lot of pieces from previous recordings, attaches a microphone to the stereo and starts singing some other ideas… in short, the situation is desperate, but evidently Corinne is one of those people who give their best under pressure, because with that material the record company decides to give the go-ahead to “Breakout”, the greatest success of Swing Out Sister.
Corinne of course also deals with the video, where she basically tells about her previous life: the three boys work in an atelier designing and making fashion clothes, including scenes of confusion and fun, until Corinne’s final fashion show.
“Breakout” remains one of the 80s songs that you remember and gladly listen to. Corinne Drewery’s iconic look with bangs, in addition of course to her voice and talent, certainly helped Swing Out Sister reserve a place in the memory of us dinosaurs. Today she is a lady who after thirty years has changed a little, not so much, but the important thing is that she always has her black bangs! Do you know what is today the only country where Swing Out Sister are still a star of music and TV? Japan! So weird, isn’t it?
