Prefab Sprout – Cars and girls

This was the title of the album containing “Cars and girls”, one of the most famous hits by Prefab Sprout. They released this album in mid March 1988. Prefab Sprout were famous and loved in Great Britain, yet I think they were one of most underrated group of the 80s. Just like the frontman Paddy McAloon, who was famous as one of the most creative and peculiar authors of the 80s. His lyrics were so uncommon, filled with quotes from books, puns, everything: an absolute genius. The album title itself comes from the lyrics of a song contained in the album, and this song was called “The Venus of the Soup Kitchen”: he was a genius, no doubt!

But also the name of the band was strange in itself: it comes from an old Nancy Sinatra’s song, saying in the lyrics “hotter than a pepper sprout”. Yet the legend says that Paddy understood “prefab” instead of “pepper”… and there we are!!!! But it doesn’t matter: one vegetable or another, we love Prefab Sprout so much!!!

#quotefromthe80s
Guess this world needs its dreamers
May they never wake up
But look at us now, quit driving
Some things hurt more much more than cars and girls
