But I can help you, I can understand
I can help you to your promised land
I'm your helping hand
Your midnight man

Flash and the Pan are famous among us dinosaurs especially for this success, released in October 1984. In fact, they were artists with a good experience: in the 1960s the two main components George Young and Harry Vanda were part of an Australian group called the Easybeats, which disbanded in 1969. Neither was Australian: one had emigrated at an early age from Scotland to the land Down Under, and the other was an emigrated Dutch.
The two guys had many other experiences, not only as musicians, but also as producers, and collaborated with many other bands, including AC/DC. And it’s no coincidence, I’d say: if you put the information together, a Scottish named Young who emigrated to Australia… and in fact George Young was the older brother of Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC.
In short, in Flash and The Pan there was a lot of experience, but then as always success comes a bit by chance. After several albums, in 1984 they released “Early morning wake up call”, perhaps their most successful album, which also contains this song. I think there are two reasons for the success of “Midnight Man”: it’s definitely a catchy song that was quite successful even in the discos, with an unstoppable beat. Then, I remember clearly that the video contributed a lot to making Flash and the Pan known all over Europe.
The video tells the story of a girl who lives a lonely life, mortified by working until late hours, who is in her bare and lonely apartment. But something strange happens, there are signs of strange presences that scare the girl, who locks herself in the room and tries to read or smoke to distract herself, but obviously can not get to sleep.
Then, at some point, here’s the Hitcock scene: the door opens wide and the presence enters the room. Here the girl could have died of a heart attack, but the presence turns out to be a huge hand with a white glove, quite funny, impossible to be scared of. The hand is also cool, he reprehends the girl, pushes her to the closet to wear a beautiful dress and drags her out of the house, to a nightclub.
And by chance, in the disco the girl knows what I would call a gentleman, and by chance the gentleman man has white gloves. In the last scene the gallant man is walking away alone on the street, when the girl chases him, reaches him, and leaves with him.
Well, I don’t know if The Flash and the Pan wanted to make a horror video, but I’d say that for this irresistible song they made a really nice video!
