The songs of destiny

Paul McCartney – Once upon a long ago

“Once upon a long ago” sounds like a special song to me.

Some songs enter our lives for unexplicable reasons, occurences, and they don’t go away. And they will never go away. Thirty years ago the great Sir Paul McCartney wrote this song for a due with his close friends Freddie Mercury. Destiny was, the duet never really happened.

But I have a personal memory related to this song, it was actually some months after the release fo the song, in March 1988. A scene in my life, a moment, a night, an iconic place, somebody whom, as in all great stories, I never happened to see again. The following morning I had a lot of thoughts in my mind, and a song, and a small object to remind me that it was not some kind of dream.

Thoughts faded away quite soon, the song will be there forever.

Playing guitars on an empty stage
Counting the bars of an iron cage
Tell me darling, what can it mean?
