Rockwell – Somebody’s watching me
Between January and February 1984 we happened to know a song which lived the typical story of many 80s song. We talk about very engaging songs, with unbelivable success, but without any followup, because destiny says that it’s enough. Yet after meny many years people still go crazy about this song.
This hit is a consequence to a family’s story. An important family. The father was the founder and CEO of Motown Berry Gordy, and then there is his son Kennedy, who had been estranged by his father and lived with his mother. And we was a sort of neglected member of the family. But he gets his chance in the music world and sings this fantastic hit.
And he calls two childhood friends for the refrain additional voices. His sister is married to one if these friend guys. His mother hears the music and understands there’s something good there. So she goes to the boy’s father with the tape, without revealing who the singer is. Somebody suggested the name “Rockwell” because it “rocks well”, and avoids claims of nepotism. The boss is doubtful, but then he hears the refrain with the friends’ voices and says, ok, we will do. It will work.
So finally this hit becomes a fantastic success worldwide, and everybody is finally happy, including Rockwell’s childhood friends who did the additional voices. Their names were Jermaine and Michael. Jackson, of course.
The video is fantastic too, and perfectly focuses the paranoic feeling of the main character, who feels surrounded by weird people chasing at him. But at the end it’s just the mailman delivering the correct newspaper. But, if we look carefully actually the mailman is… but let’s look this in the video!
#quotefromthe80s
People call me on the phone, I'm trying to avoid
But can the people on TV see me or am I just paranoid?
When I'm in the shower I'm afraid to wash my hair
'Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there
