Industry – State of the Nation

#quotefromthe80s
Don't you worry about the situation
(A message from the telephone)
They out there fighting for the state of the nation
(and waiting for a chance to come home)

Industry were perhaps the most striking example of how in the 80s, with the right song, you could really get everywhere. They had a few years of work behind them, experiences in other groups, but they were on their debut as a group. They had released their first album “Stranger to Stranger” in 1983 without raising too much interest. But in May 1984, they also released their first single, and it had all the ingredients to break through.

The song was certainly beautiful, absolutely pop, and touched an important theme, soldiers sent away to fight warsperceived as foreign. Often unprepared, almost always unaware. An echo of the Vietnam War? I would say so; the Vietnam War had ended nine years earlier, but for the veterans a different period had begun against other ghosts, and indeed in 1984 even Bruce Springsteen openly mentions the consequences of the Vietnam War in “Born in the U.S.A.”, so the theme was very sensible.

“State of the Nation” became an international hit and Industry became the band of the moment. The video also contributed to their success. It was filmed on a real aircraft carrier (but used as a museum), the USS Intrepid, which during World War II participated in operations in places like Okinawa.

The extras of the video are partly actors and dancers, and partly real members or former members of the U.S. Navy. You can see it from the uniforms, which have some different details.

After this success, Industry quickly moved on to disbanding. Some members started solo projects, while singer Jon Carin joined the band that supported Pink Floyd during their concerts. But their song stays forever in the history of the 80s.
