John Lennon – Woman
From a musical perspective, 1981 began with media dramatically covering John Lennon’s murder. A mad man shot him on the evening of Dec 8, 1980, in the hall of his residence, and then waited for the police to arrest him. He explained he was maddened by Lennon’s remark about the Beatles being “more popular than Jesus”. A mad man.
A couple of weeks earlier, in mid-November, Lennon released “Double fantasy”. His last album was already climbing the charts especially with “(Just like) starting over” when he was shot, and all the charts immediately featured hits like “Imagine” and “Happy Xmas (War is over)”, writeen over a decade before, with became suddenly popular again.
In mid January the producers released “Woman”, a new song, dedicated to Yoko Ono and to the whole universe of women. It’s a sort of thanksgiving for everything Yoko and all the women in general did to John and all men. Actually thing had not been always smooth between John and Yoko: in 1973 Yoko decided that they need a period apart, sent him overseas and also put an assistant close to John Lennon for a couple of years.
I mean, the were both peculiar characters, yet he was deeply in love with her. Yoko has often been criticized for causing Beatles’ separation and she was said to have drive Lennon into drugs. Yet he was in his age of consent, so I assume he had a part in his life choices. Maybe it was just how things had to go.
In any case, this hit quickly climbed the charts in many many countries, and is definitely a wonderful song, probably the most famous in his solo career. And he used to joke saying that “Woman” was the follow up to the Beatles song “Girl”, who had just grown up :).
