Elton John – I don’t wanna go on with you like that

At the end of June 1988, when “I don’t wanna go on with you like that” climbed the charts, Elton John was clearly an artist of the 80s, but not only of the 80s. Elton John wrote fantastic songs in the 80s, like “Nikita“, but he came out of the 70s. And his career, like for example David Bowie’s, lasted for decades, and went far beyond hits and periods.

“I don’t wanna go on with you like that” is a break-up song. Elton wanted to break with a past that he did not like. A throat surgery that prevented him from reaching the high tones of “Crocodile rock”, for example. Problems with the press and some fake scandals. Addiction to drugs and alcohol. Even his beloved Watford relegated. A rection was necessary, so Elton released “Reg strikes back”, from his real name, to break with this past.

And things started to improve! Reg\Elton broke up with many people, but not with Bernie Taupin, an excellent songwriter who had collaborated with him for ten years (and twenty more to come!). Destiny joined them at the beginning of the 70s, when they replied to an ad from a music firm, each one on his own. The music firm put them to work together. And with Bernie Taupin’s words, Reginald became the great Elton John we all love!

#quotefromthe80s
I've always said that one's enough to love
Now I hear you're bragging one is not enough
Well, someone tells me you're not satisfied
You got plans to make me one of four or five
