When Simply Red released “If you don’t know me by now” in March 1989, it really sounded like a great flashback from the past. First, because it’s really a cover. The original version goes back to 1972. Actually this was quite common with Simply Red and Mick Hucknall, who often gave new light to songs of his youth, or maybe he gave them a glory and fame that these songs never saw before.
But this song is a real flashback, because the video, somehow sad, in black and white, in an empty room with tiled chairs, includes many footages from Simply Red’s previous videos, like Money’s Too Tight (to Mention), Holding Back the Years, Infidelity e The Right Thing.
Anyway, once again the great Mick succeeded in singing this song with incredible passion and feeling, of course with his great voice and his great band. And once again his fans welcomed the song with a huge success!!
