The motorway song

Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants To Rule The World

In March 1985 many artists were releasing the songs that would lead us to that beautiful hot summer. Probably at those times we did not realize, dear dinosaur friends, that we were really in the most beautiful, most important, purest moment of the 80s. We were in the golden six months between “Do they know it’s Christmas” and Live Aid, and the songs that would accompany us all our lives were coming out. And they were so many, and so beautiful. Just think that on the same day, March 18, 1985, three wonderful songs were released! The first was “Clouds across the Moon” by The Rah Band, then Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Welcome to the Pleasuredome“, and of course this beautiful song from the Big Chair, the album by Frankie Tears for Fears.

A fantastic song, the ideal “motorway song”: the beautiful but regular songs that lift you up when you drive in the nothing on a motroway for hundreds of miles. And actually in those days I had a whole “Motorway music tape”: a compilation with all such songs, and this was the first track of side A, when I happened to drive across Europe and there was nothing hearable on the radio stations. OK, maybe a single track did not help you for hundreds of mile, but just for four or five miles… but it was a fantastic start!

The song, if we read the lyrics, speaks of greed and desire for power. The original title was “Everybody Wants to Go to War”, but Tears for Fears realized it wasn’t the right title, and changed it to the current version. The song is, along with “Shout“, one of the two symbols of Tears for Fears. Roland’s voice enters with greath strength to support Curt’s in the powerful chorus. The video is amazing, shot in California to support and promote Tears for Fears at the debut in the American market, and in fact they really came to the top of the American charts!
