Spandau Ballet – Communication
This is the story of a famous group who at the end of January released their last song. I mean, their last song as a famous group, because they were ready to quickly become a worldwide known very famous iconic group! But here’s the facts!
In 1982 Spandau Ballet were quite famous in England, and they were known also in other European countries, thanks to their first two albums, “Journeys to glory” and “Diamond” released in March. Then, in September 1982, they released a single, “Lifeline”, which started a new phase, in some way. And here we are at January 27, 1983, when they released “Communication”. This is definitely one of the greatest songs that they still play in concerts, but in some way it closed a phase of their life.
In fact, a big change was about to happen. In about one month, at the beginning of March, with the release of their new album “True” (including also “Lifeline” and “Communication”), their fame and career could make a giant leap. And it will be the time of “True”, “Gold”, and their golden period will start, up to the success of “Parade” and “Through the barricades”.
The video is also peculiar: the same industrial context as in “Lifeline”, but we see only Tony Hadley, playing a sort of detective looking like a killer, who happens to discover a truth that he would never have imagined. There are other actors in the video, but we don’t see the other members of the group, only Tony. Many things will change from the next video, more modern and glamorous. After all, they were now communicating to the whole world!

Dictate or relate I could send it to your home
"Return to sender" I could sing it down the phone
Communication let me down
And I'm left here
