Ole Ole – No controles

#quotefromthe80s
No controles
Mi forma de mirar
Porque es total
Y a todos enamoro

Of course: the primary language of pop music is English, closely followed by Latin languages like Italian, but there are always exceptions.

The early 80’s still suffer from some shivers coming from French-speaking countries (just think of the young – and Belgian – Lio and Amoureux Solitaires); or maybe remember a lively German girl (Nena and the usual war anxieties for the time in 99 Luftballons), but they also speak Spanish!

And when Ole Ole arrive with the late feminist No Controles (just eight years after the fall of Francoism, let’s remember) it’s a Hispanic electric explosion. The story of this song is also a matter of successful encounters. It all stems from the experience of Mecano, a Spanish group that was also successful in Italy with Figlio della luna (“Son of the Moon”), originally Hijo de la luna. Behind Mecano were two important characters, the Argentine producer Jorge Alvarez, and the great Spanish musician Nacho Cano. In fact Nacho was part of the Mecano along with his brother and a friend of his brother named Ana.

Well, Mecano were so successful that Alvarez wanted to try to create another similar group, and so he put together three Spanish boys and a brunette girl, born in Madrid to Cuban parents, who had such energy that was matched only by her talent. Her name is Vicky Larraz, and today she is a famous television personality. The group took the name of Ole Ole.

However, the problem was, to find a song for them, and here the good Nacho Cano came into play, and gave them a very strong song, certainly destined to overcome the success of Mecano. And in fact Ana, Mecano’s lead singer, did not take very well the fact that Nacho had given this very strong song to Ole Ole.

It really was a question of encounters, but they were lucky encounters. Ole Ole began a long career, especially in Spain and Latin America, and their history was often marked by changes in the formation of the group. After a couple of years, to be honest, at the end of a very successful tour, Vicky Larraz herself decided to pursue a solo career.

The song No controles remains the everlasting trademark of Ole Ole. They didn’t even need to shoot a real video: they basically filmed their performances as they sang it. It was a blockbuster, a controlled success if you like, but in a sense it got out of control because it surpassed every finest prediction.

When Vicky Larraz left the group, her place was taken by Marta Sanchez, who was especially appreciated in Latin American countries, in the second half of the 80s. Marta also left the group to try a solo career, and in the 90s she was also replaced by Sonia Santana, iconic personality. Even the singers of Ole Ole were absolutely out of control !!!
