Heart è uno dei migliori esempi del genio assoluto dei Pet Shop Boys. La canzone uscì come singolo il 21 marzo del 1988, proprio all’inizio della primavera, e fu l’ultimo singolo tratto dall’album Actually, dopo It’s a Sin, What have I Done to Deserve This, e Rent. La storia di questa canzone però comincia un paio di anni prima, nel 1986, quando i Pet Shop Boys sono nello studio di registrazione per incidere il loro primo album, Please, un vero capolavoro assoluto degli anni ’80. Avevano scritto la canzone con l’intenzione di darla ad altri interpreti, magari a Madonna, ma non se ne fece nulla. Il titolo originale doveva essere “Heartbeat”, ma proprio in quei giorni un altro protagonista degli anni ’80, Jon Moss, alter ego di Boy George nei Culture Club, aveva fondato un gruppo chiamato Heartbeat UK. Va anche detto che i Pet Shop Boys non erano convintissimi della canzone, e quindi considerando che non avevano nessuno a cui darla, che il titolo avrebbe generato equivoci, e soprattutto che avevano un album su cui concentrarsi nell’immediato, forse interpretarono tutti questi segnali come la prova evidente che la canzone non doveva uscire in quel momento, e la rimisero metaforicamente nel cassetto.
Se ne ricordarono, appunto, durante i lavori per il secondo album, quando però cambiarono idea: dopo aver completato la canzone con nuovi arrangiamenti, decisero di tenerla e di cantarla in proprio, con il titolo Heart, inserendola appunto in Actually.
Una bella canzone, certamente, ma se vogliamo era più semplice di tante altre, sia nel testo che nella struttura musicale. Eppure, i Pet Shop Boys seppero creare un arrangiamento che poi divenne una specie di marchio di fabbrica, con tanta elettronica e i campionamenti nel ritornello; a proposito, Neil Tennant rivelò in seguito che i campionamenti del ritornello contenevano sì la sua voce, ma anche quella di Pavarotti e quella di Wendy Smith dei Prefab Sprout.
Anche il video, lasciatemi dire, è un capolavoro di ironia, e tanti piccoli dettagli fanno un capolavoro. Il video è liberamente ispirato al film Nosferatu, ma in chiave evidentemente ironica. Neil Tennant si reca in un castello insieme alla sua sposa, con Chris Lowe che fa da autista. Nel castello compare il vampiro, che alla fine seduce la sposa, per cui nelle scene finali Neil Tennant resta da solo nel castello, mentre il vampiro e la sposa se ne vanno, sempre sull’auto guidata da Chris Lowe.
E il vampiro, lo avete riconosciuto? È il grande attore Ian McKellen, ma forse più che come vampiro siete abituati a vederlo nei panni di Magneto, o in quelli di Gandalf… La sposa invece era una attrice molto famosa in Jugoslavia dove il video fu girato (nell’attuale Slovenia vicino al confine con la Croazia) in un contesto da Frankenstein Junior. Insomma, la canzone è bella, ma tutto quello che Neil Tennant e Chris Lowe ci hanno messo attorno è assolutamente un capolavoro! È bellissimo, dopo tanti anni, scoprire che amavamo dei geni assoluti, no?
Heart is one of the best examples of the sheer genius of Pet Shop Boys. The song was released as a single on March 21, 1988, right in the early spring, and was the last single from their second album Actually, following It’s a Sin, What have I Done to Deserve This, and Rent. The story of this song, however, begins a couple of years earlier, in 1986, when Pet Shop Boys are in the recording studio for their first album, Please, a true masterpiece of the 80s. They had written the song with the intention of giving it to other singers, perhaps to Madonna, but nothing came of it. The original title was supposed to be “Heartbeat”, but just in those days another protagonist of the 80s, Jon Moss, Boy George’s alter ego in the Culture Club, had founded a group called Heartbeat UK. It must also be said that Pet Shop Boys were not completely confident in the song, and therefore considering that they had no one to give it to, that the title would have generated misunderstandings, and above all that they had an album to focus on in the immediate, perhaps they interpreted all these signals. as clear proof that this was not the right time for the song to come out, and they metaphorically put it back in the drawer.
They did not forget it anyway, and during the work on their second album, they changed their minds: after completing the song with new arrangements, they decided to keep it and sing it on their own, with the title Heart, and they also inserted the song in the album Actually.
A beautiful song, of course, but if we want it was simpler than many others, both in the text and in the musical structure. Still, Pet Shop Boys were able to create an arrangement that became a kind of trademark, with lots of electronics and samples in the chorus; by the way, Neil Tennant later revealed that the chorus samples did contain his voice, but also the voices of Pavarotti and Wendy Smith from Prefab Sprout.
Even the video, let me say, is a masterpiece of irony, and many small details make a masterpiece. The video is freely inspired by the film Nosferatu, but in an clearly ironic key. Neil Tennant travels to a castle with his bride, with Chris Lowe acting as the driver. In the castle a vampire appears, who eventually seduces the bride, so in the final scenes Neil Tennant remains alone in the castle, while the vampire and the bride leave, again in the car driven by Chris Lowe.
And the vampire, did you recognize him? He is the great actor Ian McKellen, but perhaps more than as a vampire you are used to seeing him in the role of Magneto, or in the role of Gandalf! The bride was a very famous actress in Yugoslavia where the video was shot (in present-day Slovenia near the Croatian border) in a context that recalls the movie Young Frankenstein. In short, the song is beautiful, but everything that Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have put around it is absolutely a masterpiece! It’s wonderful, after so many years, to discover that we loved absolute geniuses, isn’t it?
