Michael Jackson – Leave me alone

When Michael Jackson released “Leave me alone” in February 1989, nobody really had the feeling of a new song. In fact, he had released the album “Bad” eighteen months before. The King had also released seven singles out of this album: I just can’t stop loving you, Bad, The way you make me feel, Man in the mirror, Dirty Diana, Another part of me and the great Smooth criminal.

So nopbody really felt that this song was anything new. Yet it reached the top of the charts in many countries. With this song, Michael Jackson wanted to answer to the incredible gossip that always surrounded him. Something could have been in part true, many things were complete fantasy.

More than the song, the video carried this message. A kind of anime in the 80s (almost 90s) style, similar to “Sledgehammer“. Michael Jackson travels across a fictionary amusement park. The theme of the park is, of course, the gossip around Michael. And we can see the gossip clearly on the newspapers that we see in the video: the hyperbaric room, the shrine he built for Liz Taylor, his best friend chimpanzee, and much more. Michael Jackson did not hide and with this video gave an ironic answer to all this gossip.

The final scene is great: Michael gets up and drops off the entire park that was built upon him. Just to say: all of your business was built on me and I carried this weight. Now it’s over.

The video is great, but I also find a drop of sadness in it. I have this feeling when I consider that, even if this song had great great market success, Michael Jackson never wanted to sing it in any of his many many concerts.

#quotefromthe80s
You really hurt, you used to take and deceive me
Now who is sorry now
You got a way of making me feel so sorry
I found out right away
