Bruce Springsteen – The River

#quotefromthe80s
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
that sends me down to the river
though I know the river is dry

Many of Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics, such as the entire Nebraska album or the legendary Born in the USA, enter the existentialist strand of 80s, but certainly the firstborn in this stream for the Boss belongs to the 1980 album The River and the song of the same name. The song was released as a single in May 1981, about seven months after the album’s release, which happened the previous October. The Boss had actually performed this song in his concerts since 1979.

Wonderful song of broken dreams clashing with a provincial proletarian reality, where small ignoble stories can happen as an undesired and very early pregnancy, fixed with a marriage of austerity in a silence full of shame.

The young family father still has a social role, at least until he loses his job due to the economic crisis that seems to deny him even the understanding of his wife. And so, the only medicine is to dive into the good old days, when the two of them sneaked away to make love, after a night swim down to the river.

Sometimes a verse is worth an entire song, in this case it’s a question to tear the heart : “Is a dream a lie, if it don’t come true?”
