Simply Red – It’s only love

“Its only love” announced to the world the release of Simply Red’s new album, “A new flame”. It was January 1989.

Two years had passed since their previous album, “Men and women”, which featured great hits like “The right thing” and “Infidelity“. Four years since their first, blasting worldwide album, “Picture book”, which contained unforgettable songs like “Money’s too tight (to mention)”, “Come to my aid” or “Holding back the years”.

Definitely Simply Red became one of the iconic groups of the second half of the 80s. Mick Hucknall succeeded in remaining always faithful to his musical ideas. He never fell in the trap of being contaminated by fashionable technologies or repetable easy music. And in the late 80s, full of electronic chords created by Stock Aitken and Waterman, always the same music for all artists, we really enjoyed Mick’s pure voice, never sampled or altered, or all the sax solos in their songs, so pure and real.

We need to say that Simply Red almost every time covered old songs (like this one, a Barry White’s 1978 song). Actually the band always succeeded in making them very personal, reworking them, making them more pop and modern. The songs really became Simply Red’s songs.

Maybe in 1989 Simply Red lived one of their best years as a band. After all by this time they were undiscussed intenational stars. Their career and their success will last for decades again, it still survives today. Really, starting from 1990 the band evolves and slowly becomes Mick’s solo project. Musicians change from album to album, from tour to tour.

Actually if we think, Simply Red had a stable lineup only in their beginning years with the first two albums. Finally the members of the band started then to change, while attention concentrated more and more on Mick himself. And after 1990 Mick will clearly say that Simply Red are ultimately a solo project.

With the way we're carrying on
So enjoy and live because
It's only love doing its thing baby
