Belinda Carlisle – La Luna
I was wondering how many moons we saw in the 80s. I mean, from an astronomic perspective, if I’m not wrong, it’s about 123 full moons in the whole 80s. The last full moon was on Dec 12, 1989, and there was another new moon on Dec 28, 1989.
In our beloved songs, many 80s moons deserve a mention. The last one was the moon that Belinda Carlisle sang in “La Luna”. She released the song about two months after “Leave a light on“, the first single from her album “Runaway horses”.
I happended to know the song some time later, to be honest, but I completely fell in love with this melody, and it’s still one of my favourite songs. So I’m proud to call it a song of the 80s, since Belinda released it on December 4, 1989, even if we know that actually the 80s ended on November 9, when the Berlin wall fell.
A beautiful songs, full of Spanish atmosphere, in the lyrics, in the melody, in the video. A song about romancing, with Belinda that eventually decides to leave her unknown lover during the unexpected love story. But after some time, she finds herself in a grey town, Marseille, thinking of him, and realizing that she’ll no longer be able to find him. It’s all about sliding doors, those apparently ordinary moments when you take a decision, and it impacts your whole life to follow.
A final consideration: if Belinda was in Spain with her lover and at the end she’s in Marseille, I hope she carried her passport, because in 1989 the Schengen area was not yet a reality!
#quotefromthe80s
On and on the band was playing
A song of surrender
On and on the sun would soon break through
Ah La Luna La Luna
The night that we fell under the spell of the moon
