Pump up the volume - MARRS - 80sneverend - The beginning of the end

The beginning of the end

“Pump up the volume” marks a spot in the 80s. No doubt. In these last days of August 1987 a lot of things were coming to an end. Holidays, august, summer, which I really enjoyed, but also from the music point of view. It was like the beginning of the end of the 80s. Actually we already realized that, since a couple of years, nothing was the same. Pop icons in a declining phase, the rise to the power of Stock, Aitken and Waterman with their always similar jingles. Yet in these days there was something more.

A song released at the beginning of August reached no 1 in many countries, and actually it wasn’t even a song, but rather an experiment of mixing and sampling techniques. Already Sigue Sigue Sputnik tried to track the future: I would not say they succeeded, but they had relevance indeed, which means that in any case, that was the direction: pop and probably the 80s were about to become… grown ups. In these days, “Pump up the volume” released by M/A/R/R/S, reached no 1 in many charts.

They released just one single. Just that single. And they changed music forever.

It’s beautiful, however, that both Sigue Sigue Sputnik and M/A/R/R/S symbolized the future leveraging names and images from the Russian cosmonauts of the 60s 🙂 !!!
