Jennifer Rush – The Power Of Love
#quotefromthe80s
Never wonder where I am
'Cause I am always by your side
'Cause I am your lady
And you are my man

In the 80s, if you wanted to make a love song, you didn’t have to get crazy to find a title: there was a great title for all seasons, and it was “The power of love”. First of all, in 1984, Frankie Goes to Hollywood used it, then at the beginning of 1985 Huey Lewis and the News chose it again for their song taken from the Back to the Future soundtrack, and in June 1985 this title becomes a record, because another fantastic song called The power of love comes out and is destined to remain in the history of that fantastic decade. And even this song can really be called a record song, we are of course talking about Jennifer Rush’s The power of love.
Jennifer had enjoyed a modest popularity up to that moment, and was best known in Germany and the United States. She was the daughter of a German tenor who had settled in New York for working purposes, she had spent her adolescence between her country of birth and her country of origin, using her real name, Heidi Stern. In 1982 she returned to Germany, always following her father, as she was convinced that Germany was a good place to launch the career of a solo female voice. And she was right, because her career took off in Germany.
In December 1984 she released her second album, entitled with her stage name, precisely Jennifer Rush (the first album had been released five years earlier and was instead titled Heidi). This album included The Power of Love, which became a resounding success in June 1985 when it was released as a single with a famous video. Heidi\Jennifer herself wrote the song years before, and it seems that she dedicated it to her boyfriend. Jennifer said that he was the second love in her life, but it is a fact that the two stayed together for many years.
The video was shot in New York by a German director, and describes a somewhat distressing story: Jennifer realizes that her boyfriend is involved in a shady story with bad looking guys, and tries to protect him and remove him from their influence after seeing some upsetting scenes. We don’t know if she succeeded, but the video ends with Jennifer opening the bedroom door to make sure her boyfriend is sleeping peacefully. Certainly a good video, however, very suggestive.
Returning to the records, The power of love was an incredible success in England, where it entered the Guinness Book of World Records and remained seven years as the best-selling single by a female singer in the British music industry. We are in 1985, and it means that Heidi\Jennifer had also overcome Madonna by far! But then, in 1992, another love song arrived, I will always love you by Whitney Houston, and the story changed, but our Jennifer two years later had a further satisfaction, because this song was covered by the serial copier Laura Branigan, who only used to copy world class stuff like Gloria, Self control or Forever Young !!!
Also in this case Laura Branigan had the merit of bringing this song to the American charts, but it took one more different cover (and this is also a record) to reach the first position in America, which was made by the great Celine Dion. However, the song is beautiful and of great impact, so it is no wonder that great singers wanted to cover it. After all, it is absolutely one of the songs that after almost forty years can never miss at any wedding party!
